What's In It For You?
1. Reduce your Carbon Footprint and Impact Global Warming
Most carbon emissions are produced by fuels that provide electricity or transportation. By reducing your company's energy usage, you reduce your carbon footprint.
2. Save Money
By reducing your carbon footprint, you reduce business energy costs, save money, and improve your bottom line.
Reducing Costs is like Increasing Revenue
| If your profit margin is | And you save | That's like selling an extra |
|---|---|---|
| 5% | $50 | $1,000 |
| 10% | $2,000 | $20,000 |
| 20% | $50,000 | $250,000 |
Insulate your business from rising energy and resource costs
Electricity
The price of commercial electricity in the U.S. increased 18% over the five-year period from 2001 through 2006 and will jump again when carbon caps or a carbon tax are put in place.
A $50/ton carbon tax would increase electricity costs by approximately 35% (Richard Newell, Duke University).
And it doesn't matter whether it's a carbon tax or a carbon cap and trade system — both will result in increased energy costs.

Transportation
The price of transportation is directly tied to the price of gasoline and diesel, and these fuels have increased in cost 97% and 89% respectively in California over the last five years.
If a $50/ton carbon tax is phased in over five years, gasoline prices would rise by an additional 12 cents per gallon per year; diesel would go up by 14 cents per gallon per year.

Water
Over the past five years, municipal water rates have increased an average of 27% in the United States. With more frequent and more severe droughts and growing population, water prices are expected to increase even faster in the near future.
Osmosis Day Spa & Sanctuary saves $6,540 every year by using a water filtration system and eliminating most bottled water.

Solid Waste
Tipping fees will continue to increase as municipalities struggle to cope with mountains of waste and encourage recycling. Where landfills are at capacity, waste companies are already forced to incur the costs of waste transport to remote locations.
However, many businesses don't realize the opportunity to reduce carbon by reducing the waste they produce. Since production and transportation of goods requires fossil fuels, lowering waste translates into a lower carbon footoprint.
3. Improve Productivity, Morale and Customer Relations
Businesses that are environmentally responsible are able to:
- improve their image
- attract and retain talented employees that are more committed and productive
- increase customer loyalty and sales
- improve business processes
A green working environment has proven time and again to improve employee morale and boost productivity.
Brett White, President & CEO of CB Richard Ellis
In fact, many business people see climate change as one of the biggest market opportunities ever. In 2006, when California was considering capping greenhouse gas emissions and some voices were saying it would be a bad idea, many others were pointing out the opportunity:
60 economists (including three Nobel Laureates) wrote an open letter to Governor Schwarzeneger stating that "Well-designed [climate change] strategies can stimulate innovation and efficiency, [helping] the state become a technological leader in the global marketplace."
4. Adapt to Changing Business Conditions
Everyone is talking about climate change. Customer preferences are shifting as a result. Businesses that show environmental leadership are creating a new market niche and stand to gain loyal customers. Businesses with a demonstrated commitment to the environment have:
- reduced regulatory and litigation risk
- competitive advantage in a culture of environmental awareness
- climate-friendly products and services ahead of the crowd
But many business people are predicting that the green niche will soon become "how business is done" — especially in the fast-approaching carbon- and resource-constrained world.
The great thing about the dilemma we're in is that we get to reimagine every single thing we do. In other words, there isn't one single thing that we make that doesn't require a complete remake. And so there are two ways of looking at that. One is like: Oh my gosh, what a big burden. The other way to look at it, which is the way I prefer, is: What a great time to be born! What a great time to be alive! Because this generation gets to essentially completely change this world. — Paul Hawken
